Our story

One Child Changed Everything.

In 2008, founder Jolene Christian was searching for answers for her oldest son, who was struggling to learn to read and write. After a neuropsychologist diagnosed him with dyslexia, Jolene was told that he might never learn to read and write.

She refused to let that prediction define his future.

Jolene began researching dyslexia and trying different reading programs, determined to find a way to help her son learn. Several approaches didn’t work, but she kept searching until she discovered programs specifically designed around how students with dyslexia learn.

That search eventually led her to the Barton Reading & Spelling System. As she began working with her son at home, she saw what could happen when a struggling reader was finally taught in a way that made sense to him. His skills grew, and so did his confidence.

As a former second-grade teacher and homeschooling mom, Jolene knew there were other bright, capable children experiencing the same frustration. Helping her own son ultimately became a mission to help other students receive the instruction and encouragement they need to succeed.

What began at home with one child eventually grew into Reading & Spelling SOS, helping students move beyond the struggle and discover that they can become confident readers and spellers.

I have been an educator for over 20 years, but my passion for helping struggling readers is also deeply personal. I homeschooled all five of my children, including two sons with dyslexia, and experienced firsthand how important it is to teach children in the way they learn best. I have always loved learning and teaching, and there is nothing more rewarding to me than watching a child who once struggled begin to believe in themselves. My passion is to rescue kids who are drowning in a sea of reading and spelling struggles and help them become confident, successful learners.
